Uchinadi 1

The original Karate of Okinawa

Uchinadi, tekobushi, or tode as it is known to the Okinawans, is the very essence of karate and derives its prodigious effectiveness from sophisticated body movement, and the dynamic striking power of “atifa.”

Seventy years ago it prompted the founder of the internationally famous publishing house of Kodansha to remark: “ The Ryukyuans had developed through centuries of practice the peculiar art of self-defence… known as tekobushi… A Ryukyuan expert in this deadly art could smash every bone in his victim’s body with the thrusts of his arms, as if he had struck with a giant hammer.”

Demonstrated here by Toshihiro Oshiro, 7th Dan, uchinadi is karate for the connoisseur—a sophisticated art that combines elegant body dynamics with deadly force.

Includes: A lecture on reactive hip striking methods, punitive blocking techniques, and the destructive ultra-short punch as well as demonstrations of Naihanchi, Pinan Shodan-Godan and Wankan.

From the early 1930s Zenryo Shimabukuro studied with Kyan Sensei, and when he had mastered the art of his mentor, opened his own training hall, the Seibukan. In time he was succeeded by his son, our author, Zenpo.

Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu 2

by Takayoshi Nagamine

This DVD program presents the first ten Kata of the Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate syllabus up to Naihanchi Sandan performed by the present headmaster Takayoshi Nagamine 9th Dan, assisted by senior instructors Yasuhiro Makishi 9th Dan, and Taira 8th Dan.

Each Kata is performed at full speed and shown in slow motion; the most important technical points are then explained by Nagamine sensei, and the applications of fundamental techniques demonstrated by the three instructors. Key issues discussed include the development of explosive striking power, the most vulnerable targets to attack, and the differences between applications as they are performed in the kata, and their use in realistic self defense situations.

Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate is based in part upon the fundamental teachings of Choki Motobu, Chotoku Kyan and other legendary Okinawan karate pioneers. The genius of the Founder, Shoshin Nagamine, was in drawing together the most refined elements of each school and creating from them his own unique style of Shorin Ryu karate.
